Antique Georgian Sterling Silver Salver Rococo Mask Vine Decoration London 1742

About the Item

We are delighted to offer this magnificent Georgian solid silver salver/tray in Rococo (Rocaille) design, made in London 1742 with the marks of George Wickes - a leading 18th c. London silversmith whose successful firm would later become known as the renowned Garrard & Co. (Royal Court Supplier). This salver is exemplary and presents preeminent British Rococo artistry in fine silverware. The border remains in exceptional crisp condition for its age (over 280 years old) and features a cast silver vine design with four figural masks of Bacchus in each corner with a fabulous amount of detail and embellishments. The vine leaves intricately pierced, asymmetric and fluid in design capture the essence of Rococo design and philosophy splendidly whilst also conveying the level of craftsmanship involved. As a further testament to its quality, the border curves and contours around the salver's edge with an almost ribbon-like effect, accentuating each ornamentation as if to invite the onlooker to admire the piece from all manner of angles. The bacchanalia theme is carried across to even its feet which support the tray with four vine leaf clusters; a minute yet demonstrative element of how much thought and no-costs-cut craftsmanship have gone into the making of this salver. The face of the salver is left unembellished and made from a good gauge of heavy silver that can be fully appreciated upon holding. The centre has been hand engraved with a beautiful cartouche, crest and monogram. The mirror-like surface is a tasteful contrast to the ornate Rococo border and acts as the perfect background to opulently highlight the objects placed on top whilst not being excessively ostentatious. Owing to its practical size and versatile proportions, a plethora of uses even in the modern day can be thought of with a touch of creativity. Serving some hors d'oeuvres, desserts or to enjoy your espresso in the morning, this salver may just be the perfect addition for the most opulent and indulging antique dining experience. It also undoubtedly serves as a splendid accent on a table or a sideboard, immediately elevating the ambience of its setting. In spite of its age and traditional Rococo design, we have found such salvers to be surprisingly versatile whether be it in an antique setting or as a juxtaposing centrepiece in a modern interior. Overall, a wonderful example of fine English Rococo silverware of the George II era by a fine silversmith. Full English hallmarks are present on the reverse side of the salver. *Please note: all images with other items are for display purposes only, this listing is for the title item only. • Antique Georgian Sterling Silver Basket/Bowl Rococo Shell - Robert Garrard 1804
    Located in London, GB
We are delighted to offer this magnificent Georgian solid silver basket made in London, 1804 by the acclaimed Royal gold/silversmith, Garrard (marks for Robert Garrard). Garrard (founded in 1735, surviving the test of time, still producing fine silverware and jewellery today), throughout history has been serving and producing exceptional pieces of silver and jewellery for the British Royal Family. The firm was appointed Crown Jeweller by Queen Victoria in 1843 which may come as no surprise upon examining the exceptional quality, craftsmanship and designs of their silverware/jewellery. It may come as no surprise that this George III basket presents some of the most desirable and impressive characteristics and embellishments. The basket is made in the manner of George II Rococo design and features ornate scrolled edges, rococo shells and intricate piercings. It is made from a wonderfully sturdy and thick gauge, resulting in the basket weighing just a touch over 1.4kg in spite of its relatively hollow and pierced design. This can be further appreciated when handling in person whereby the hefty weight is supported by the thick handle, presenting a reassuring feel of exceeding quality. The balance between asymmetric scrolls and the overall proportions of this basket is majestic and the intricate repeated piercings of crosses and anthemion motifs allow for light to shine through, further elevating its splendour on a table or display. Such baskets would have been originally owned and used by the upper echelons of society including the aristocracy and wealthy families acting as both a practical and symbolic dining accoutrament of prosperity. This basket has a central coat of arms hand engraved. We believe that even today, such baskets are still highly versatile and wonderful objects of decoration and practicality whether be it in an antique setting or a juxtaposing centrepiece in a modern interior. Owing to it generous size and elaborate design, it could be used to serve bread or cake in a party setting or perhaps hold some fruit on your dining table in the most opulent manner. Overall, an impressive and ornate example of fine Georgian silverware, ideal for immediately elevating the ambience of a setting and adding a magnificent silvery presence to your interior. A full set of English hallmarks is present on the base - the handle of the basket is unmarked. *Please note: all images with other items are for display purposes only, this listing is for the item mentioned in the title. SIZE Size (cm) L:34.5cm W:28.5cm H:22.5cm (to top of handle) Size (inches) L:13.5 W:11.22 H:8.85 (to top of handle) Weight: 1402 grams (45.07 Troy oz) CONDITION Good Condition - The basket is in good overall antique condition considering its age and type. There are some areas of old restoration with one pierced section having been repaired and some slight splits around the feet of the basket. Due to its ornate design, this is not very apparent or visible however we have mentioned it for accuracy. Areas with the most significant restoration have been shown in the last image. We are delighted to offer this wonderful little solid silver tea caddy spoon made by Joseph Willmore in Birmingham, 1814. The spoon is beautifully crafted in the form of a single vine leaf with an accurate and intricate design ranging from the stem (handle) of the leaf to the different textures (stippled & embossed silver) on the surface of the spoon. The centre of the spoon is embossed in the form of a bunch of grapes with its stem conjoining to the thicker vine handle. Such spooms would have traditionally been used to scoop some tea leaves out of a tea caddy/canister, however, with some creative ideas why not try some new uses such as serving spices or even as a small canapé...
