Early English Georgian Period Hester Bateman Sterling Silver Baby Spoon

About the Item

Beautiful Hester Bateman George III period baby spoon with very fine scroll decoration and wonderful period engraved initials S. M. on the back. Rare, early highly collectible piece in exceptional condition. Marks: HB for Hester Bateman, Lion passant for sterling silver in the back of the handle. The mark is Hester Bateman's early mark dating to circa 1761 Hester Bateman, 1709-1794, was the most famous English female silversmith of the eighteenth century. She and her husband John worked together until his death in 1760. Hester, then a mother of five, took over the business and not only supported her children, but also succeeded in providing them with a legacy of a family business. Her sons Peter and John became silversmiths, as did her grandson, William.
