Swedish Folk Art 19th-Century Bentwood Box in Pine
About the Item
This is the Swedish wooden box, so-called svepask, from the second half of the 19th century.
It comes made of pine. This type of vessel was used when the daily provisions were carried out to the fields or to the forest. The lid was used as a cutting board.
The manufacture was done by sawing shallow straight grooves at regular intervals in the thin, still damp board in order to be able to bend it into an oval shape. The part of the round that went around was tied with a seam of fresh inner bark. After the ash dried, the dry cracks were also tied with stitches of fresh inner bark.
The bottom and the locking posts were plugged with wooden plugs.
The ash's only surface treatment is handling by human hands for more than 100 years.
