19th Century Native Pomo Hanging Gift Basket
About the Item
Very nice Pomo hanging gift basket with three rod construction. Fully feathered, embellished with shell discs and abalone drops. This is a beautiful feathered "night" basket. The design or legend on this basket represents "night", the dark feathers represent "night", the outer rim of wampum of beads represent the "moon", the pendants of abalone shells represent the "stars."
These baskets are used as wedding gifts and are greatly treasured by the tribe. The time required to construct one of these baskets is two years. The green of the mallard signifies the astuteness, discretion and watchfulness. The yellow of the meadowlark signifies success, deity and fidelity. The wampum signifies riches and generosity. The design shows the relation of the weaver to the chief of the tribe. 4 1/2" H x 16" D
