Genet & Michon
Genet & Michon was a Parisian lighting manufacturer and the brand of choice for the city’s tastemakers. Initially inspired by Louis XVI design, the company became famous for crafting fine Art Deco fixtures. Its ornate glass and metal creations feature rich details and glamorous touches. Today, vintage and antique Genet & Michon wall lights, ceiling fixtures and table lamps remain in high demand for their beauty and quality.
The company was founded in 1911 by Philippe Genet and Lucien Michon, both former students of the Ecole Boulle in Paris. They initially started Genet & Michon as a furniture-design firm but pivoted to focus on lighting in 1919.
By 1922, Genet & Michon was exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Salon d'Automne. The company continued showing at both exhibitions until the late 1930s. They also took part in the 1937 World Exposition in Paris.
Genet & Michon’s proprietary thick-pressed glass was part of its recipe for success. The glass, which contained no added pigments, increased the lamp’s glow and provided superior illumination in the surrounding area. Another important ingredient in the company’s fortunes was collaborations with excellent designers like Paul Follot, Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Raymond Subes and Maurice Dufrene.
Genet & Michon continued designing and producing light fixtures after World War II and into the 1960s, receiving commissions for the Élysée Palace, as well as Paris-based ministries and consulates.
