Conduit, connecting the heritage of marble design with contemorary techniques
About the Item
Austere in its beauty yet modestly playful, this marble lamp references an archetypal ancient aqueduct, thus creating a creating a “luminous conduit” for the home. "Conduit" casually references classicism through its elegant profile and noble materiality, while nodding towards the postmodern.
"Conduit" is a tabletop lamp that connects the heritage of marble design with contemporary manufacturing techniques. It references the archetypal Roman aqueduct remains that dot the Southern European landscape.
Solid marble is cnc milled and adapted to fit a 30 cm tubular led bulb. Essentially a two dimensional cut out profile, the lamp features an elaborately milled groove on one side to accommodate a woven fabric cable while exposing it, enhancing the directional sense between power source and light.
The choice of marble was decided based on locality. Three distinct Greek types were chosen, Chios in dark brown, Ioannina in warm grey and the classic Pentelic in bright white. Non local Travertine was added as a reclaimed material option, its origin justified due to its familiarity and abundant presence in the Athenian built environment of the 1960s and 1970s.
‘Conduit’ is designed by Thanos Karampatsos of studio Hoi Kaloi

Greece is for Lovers
Greece is for Lovers is the brainchild of Thanos Karampatsos and Christina Kotsilelou, as lovingly conceived at the foot of the Acropolis hill in 2006. Sharing similar aesthetic influences, the creative minds behind it introduced a brand new sense of ‘Greekness’ to contemporary product design, by mixing up a concoction of their country’s spiciest ingredients: humour, irony, nonchalance and extravagance.
Inspired by the stereotypical notion of what is widely held to be Greek, their designs comment on habitual activities and behavioural patterns of both the past and the present; they narrate an alternative home country, consisting of part memory, part fantasy and part wish. Unwilling to compromise, the GIFL trademark aesthetic sits comfortably in the controversial area between luxe and kitsch. By exploring areas widely considered as an anathema, or plain shameful, they casually retrieve value and inspiration. Greece is for Lovers’ products, whether one-offs or limited editions, are handmade with care by local craftsmen and are considered a synonym for contemporary Greek design.
