About the Item

A Late 20th century American studio craft carved wood and brass menorah by, Charles B. Cobb decorated with nine brass sleeves set into the carved organic wood formed menorah. (Charlie) Cobb (1947 - 2021; American) Born March 28, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan. Charlie lived most of his adult life in Santa Rosa, California. He was an artist extraordinaire. Charlie worked in wood the way Michelangelo worked with marble—intuitively sensing what was flowing inside the material he was working with. Charlie made both functional and sculptural art working with exotic hardwoods, sometimes augmenting his work with metal and glass. His works are in homes and offices throughout the United States, Asia and Europe and in the permanent collections of museums. His functional work consisted of cabinets, chests of drawers, tables, desks, clocks, handrails, chairs, lamps, bedframes and mirrors. He created free standing and wall hung sculptures that pushed the limits of his materials towards an elegance that left viewers in awe. "My work is both organic and geometric: my ultimate goal has always been to create a unique, beautiful object." Charlie grew up in Detroit. His friends from elementary school remember him designing cars as a kid; his high school teachers recognized him as extraordinarily talented. He attended The Art Center of Design in Pasadena, California before settling in Santa Rosa, California.
