19th Century Antique Konya Rug

About the Item

Konya – Central Anatolia This Konya rug is one of the most famous and desired Turkish rugs for its magnificent colours, bright wool and bold nomadic design. With two geometric medallions, known as memling guls, in the centre, this rug has a masterful combination of geometric shapes and colour contrasts. The result is a highly durable rug with high-quality and shiny wool. This piece is more than a hundred years old and in perfect condition. Konya rugs are famous and coveted for their dazzling colours, shiny wool, and bold designs. Therefore, Konya are the most sought-after antique carpets in Turkish villages. They usually have geometric medallions scattered in rows or covering the entire field of the carpet. But whatever the pattern, these rugs consistently display a masterful combination of striking geometric figures and stunning colour combinations. Ancient Konya rugs are the Turkish counterparts of Caucasian kazaks, although they are generally older and much rarer. Tribal design elements and vibrant colours abound in these Turkish masterpieces. Many antique rug collectors are immediately attracted to Konya rugs for their extensive use of colours, contrasts and patterns. The vibrancy of the colours highlighting the geometric shapes and the use of contours makes viewers focus their attention on the geometric medallions and floral motifs, as they are used to define the foreground of the central area of the rug. The designs that cover the entire central area or the rows of geometric figures may vary depending on the rug. Still, the colours are always organized to captivate the attention of those who observe them. Like other tribal rugs, Konya rugs are unique because they use straight lines. The right angles of the designs along the rug were created to create a background for the colours inside. As the colours usually directly contrast with the rug's background, they become visually attractive and can be used versatilely in different interior designs. Due to the saturation of the colours, antique Konya Turkish rugs are recommended for use in areas where they can stand out. They can be placed in sections of the house, such as the living room or bedroom, because of their clear and distinct definition of geometric shapes and can create the focus for the other furniture in the room. A characteristic of Konya rugs is the use of resistant and shiny wool, which results in greater durability of the carpet.
