A Dug-out Carved Rustic Primitive Tree Trunk Fireside Chair Formed of Elm, c1800

About the Item

An amazing dug-out tree trunk chair dating from the 1800s and originating from England - formed from the base of an Elm tree trunk and would have been used in daily life which is demonstrated by the amazing patina to the seat where years of use has polished the seat. The piece has a curved back with stepped angled sides which have a great aesthetic. Befitting of interiors that blend pieces of different styles and ages, the piece would work equally well in a contrasting modern interior as well as traditional and also one that harnesses the stripped-back, primitive, rustic, wabi-sabi aesthetic that is so on trend currently and embraces and helps us see natural beauty in imperfection. The piece has great patina that only the nature of the material and time can produce. This item is functional and you can sit on it, the back is a little narrow for modern man but you could consider a loose back cushion but regardless of frequency of use as a chair going forward it is a great, unique, sculptural piece of folk art which would have been a very practical item in its day. Chairs of the time would have been placed around the fire as the hearth was the focal point of a dwelling. The chairs are purported to be low as often peat was burnt in the fire which emitted noxious gases. Condition: Given age the piece is in very good condition. Please do expect endearing quirks in line with age and type, you are buying a piece of unique history. • English Georgian Period Elm Ladderback Fireside Armchair with Rush Seat, c. 1800

An uncommon circa 1800 English Georgian period country ladderback fireside armchair in elm with woven rush seat. Delightfully proportioned, with the tall six-slat back “towering” over the extra-low seat, and the frame having a laid-back profile. Hand-crafted of solid elm, with nicely turned arms, legs, and stretcher. Stands on carved club feet in front and simple metal band-reinforced feet in back. Displays very handsome authentic antique character, color, and patina throughout. Natural woven rush seat is likely not original, though it does have some age to it, is period-appropriate, and complements the overall look. Designed to bring a hearthside sitter closer to the fire, with its seat also being at a perfect height for a child. Antique ladderback...
