Upholstered Lounge Chair by Folke Jansson for Wincrantz Skövde, Sweden 1960s

About the Item

Sweden contributed to the progression of the marriage between form and function in its own way, based on long-standing traditions, natural resources, and the critical, yet often coincidental, availability of a creative genius. Folke Jansson was certainly one of the latter, designing unique items with an artistic touch. Jansson is a designer who is difficult to define; he was known for his functionalist approach, emphasizing the usefulness and ergonomics of his designs. As such, this lounge chair features a curved body with effortlessly flowing lines and an open profile. The arms curve downward and out from the back, highlighting the shape. It is evident from every angle that the body was designed with the sitter in mind, offering great ergonomic design. This model is built in a permanently reclined position, which is a key feature; the slightly reclined backrest and raised seat create a shell that provides ultimate comfort both for the eyes and the body. The round edges of the body create a nice balance by contrasting with the tapered shape of the legs. Furthermore, the colours and texture of the wood and the upholstery complement each other as well to create the coveted mid-century modern look. With its cosy aesthetic and material quality, this lounge chair is truly soulful and timeless. In the absence of any ornamentation, the focus stays on the stylish look supported by functionality and comfort. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair has been reupholstered recently in a premium alpaca blend fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. At first, he was primarily recognized for his work as a painter, sculptor, and engraver throughout the 1940s, when he established his ceramic studio in Köping. Folke Jansson turned towards design when he had the idea to make his own chair, but found it too difficult to make. He asked for the assistance of the Wincrantz Company that started shaping his prototype with metal and papier-mâché which gave birth to the tripod chair, “Arabesk”. He exhibited the model in 1955 at the Göteborg Furniture Fair in Sweden with SM Wincrantz. This event and the success of the Arabesk was the starting point of a long collaboration between the designer and the firm. Jansson began designing furniture for the company and continued to experiment with free forms and geometric shapes. Nowadays, his work is represented in museums around Sweden and internationally as well, such as at the Vitra Design Museum in Germany that is among the world's leading museums of design.
