Rare French Empire Mahogany Bookcase Library Jacob Desmalter
About the Item
Large and very unusual French Empire bookcase in beautifully figured mahogany veneer. Four glazed doors (original glass), interior with original shelves (two on each level allow an adjustment for larger objects), the front of each shelf is veneered with a stripe of ebonized fruitwood. In fact, this piece of furniture might have served originally as a collector’s cabinet (and not as a bookcase). It actually looks fantastic, if some busts or vases are placed on top inbetween the pillars.
This bookcase is attributed to the workshop of François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter (1770-1841). An almost identical bookcase, but of smaller dimensions sold at auction, was stamped by this famous cabinetmaker. The very restraint design makes this furniture appear very modern.
