19th Century Mahogany Display Cabinet
About the Item
A superb quality late 19th century Mahogany Display cabinet, of imposing large proportions, having profusely carved top section, incorporating foliate, ribbons, shell, cartouche and quiver, over bevelled glass doors and sides enclosing adjustable shelves, raised on elegant stand with stunning lion monopodia carved legs and undertier.
This magnificent cabinet is really quite striking indeed. It dates towards the end of the late 19th century and is very much in keeping stylistically and in terms of its quality with some furniture which we have seen documented as produced for some of the finest houses in the land at the time, by some of the finest cabinet making workshops at the time, including Gillows of Lancaster. However we have unfortunately been unable to locate any signatures, or stamps which would allow us to firmly attribute the piece.
The carving is quite spectacular. Deep, rich and crisp, with such a wide variety of different subjects it has clearly been carried out by an absolute expert.
The overall quality of the mahogany which has been used in the construction is fantastic, dense, rich and almost certainly the most expensive timber which money could buy in the late 19th century.
From a practical perspective this cabinet has adjustable shelves and great viewing. The glazed ends help with viewing of whatever is inside it, as does the fact there is no fussy astragal decoration like many others that you will see.
A quite magnificent piece of furniture this 19th century cabinet would be the absolute making of a huge variety of different spots around the home, or in a hotel lobby, or similar. It really does stand out and would make a fabulous feature item, as well as being hugely functional and practical.
The cabinet has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, well trained, traditional antique furniture restorers and they have ensured that it is absolutely ready for immediate use in whatever its final detination may be.
If you are looking for something spectacular this will certainly not disappoint.
