About the Item

19th Century Biedermeier cabinet with columns Southern Germany/Austria Walnut Biedermeier around 1820 Dimensions: H x W x D: 208 x 133 x 56 cm The dimensions are taken at the head of the unit. The width and depth of the body are smaller. Description: Two-tier plinth section standing on plinth square feet. The feet protrude risalike from the actual depth of the plinth and form the support for the free-standing columns at the top. These flank the furniture at the full height of the doors and end at the top with marvellous bronze capitals. The design of the cabinet is absolutely characterised by the cornice, which protrudes both forwards and to the sides, is profiled several times and ends at the top in a flat triangular gable. I find the neatly laid walnut timbers impressive. The base and the corresponding part of the headboard have been deliberately veneered in a darker colour. This gives the furniture a clearly defined horizontal structure. The vertical axes are emphasised by the ebonised columns and the striking strip, which is also blackened and stands out clearly against the light-coloured wood. The design of the front is continued on the sides. There are three shelves inside. The piece of furniture can be completely dismantled for transport. See photo. Condition: Cleanly restored and polished with shellac.
