Art Deco Desk And Chairs Set By Jules Leleu And Maxime Old

About the Item

This timeless chair and desk set features the iconic designs of two French Art Deco greats, Jules Leleu and Maxime Old. Together, the chic set epitomizes the fluid elegance of this period’s best furniture suites. The three chairs by Jules Leleu are quintessential of his refined aesthetic, with subtly curving lacquered wood frames and graceful grey velvet upholstery. Leleu is best known for masterful designs that combine simplified shapes, exotic woods and difficult techniques such as marquetry and lacquer. A perfect complement to Leleu’s elegant chairs, Maxime Old’s sheik mahogany desk commands an impressive presence. The desk showcases all of the classic elements of Old’s style, including clean lines, organic curvature, high-quality timber and delicate silvered enhancements. Born in 1883, Jules Leleu studied decorative painting at the Academie des Beaux-Arts, and took over his father’s furniture business with his brother Marcel in 1901. After fighting in World War I, he devoted himself to furniture-making and eventually opened his firm in Paris in 1924. Just one year later, he exhibited at the Exposition Industrielle et Arts Decoratifs, where he won the Grand Prix, cementing his legacy as one of the leaders of the French Art Deco. He would go on to complete major commissions all over the world, including the design for the French president’s private railroad car, until he died in 1961. Today, Jules’ works can be seen at major museums like the Met, and Maison Leleu is still family-owned and run by his children and grandchildren. Maxime Old was born in 1910 into a family of master cabinet makers in Paris. After graduating from the prestigious École Boulle, Old studied in the studio of Art Deco furniture master, Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, whose influence can be seen across Old's spectacular oeuvre. His innovative designs were highly acclaimed during his lifetime, and he received many major private and public commissions, including from the Mobilier Nationale and the Ministry of France. The master continued designing and producing beautiful furniture until he died in 1991, and his pieces are still in high demand today for their elegance and functionality.
