Gabrielle Bakker 1990 Boys Still Life Painting Gallery Provenance Custom Frame

About the Item

A contemporary / vintage surrealist style still life painting by American woman artist Gabrielle Bakker presented in a custom frame. From the Gabrielle Bakker website, "Gabrielle Bakker has created a world in which Minotaurs mingle with geishas and various mythical characters. Beautifully executed, her paintings combine diverse formal and historical means in achieving rich and compelling imagery. Masterfully painted, Bakker's work has a clarity and light rarely seen in our time." - William Bailey. The painting dates to 1990 and is titled, "Boys Still Life". The composition features a sword, an obelisk, a bow, a mask, a football, a piece of paper among other items artfully and skillfully placed in the painting. The use of the entire field of the painting support creates an immediacy to the work, inviting the viewer to step inside the world created in the still life. There are two gallery labels verso. One from the Mincher / Wilcox Gallery of San Francisco. From online, "Prior to co-founding Artsource Consulting in 1994, Ms. Wilcox founded the critically acclaimed Mincher/Wilcox Gallery in 1987, representing American, European, and Latin American artists." And the other from the Earl McGrath Gallery of Los Angeles. Ms. Bakker's work is in the Art Institute of Chicago, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Cleve Carney Museum of Art, among others.

  • Alfano Dardari Midcentury Trompe L’oeil Still Life Oil Painting Framed
    Located in Atlanta, GA
A stunning trompe l'oeil (fool the eye) mid 20th century Italian oil painting by artist Alfano Dardari. This work depicts a beautiful flower in a vase with a perfect little droplet of water resting ever so gently on a petal. The flower in the vase sits atop a shelf upon which a gorgeous butterfly has alighted. Also on the shelf is a gold watch. And do you see a thread through all of this? I do. Mind you, it's my opinion but I'll happily share it with you. Memento Mori. Instead of defining it for you, I'll offer this description from the Tate in London: "Memento mori is a Latin phrase meaning ‘remember you must die’. A basic memento mori painting would be a portrait with a skull but other symbols commonly found are hour glasses or clocks, extinguished or guttering candles, fruit, and flowers. Closely related to the memento mori picture is the vanitas still life. In addition to the symbols of mortality these may include other symbols such as musical instruments, wine and books to remind us explicitly of the vanity (in the sense of worthlessness) of worldly pleasures and goods. The term originally comes from the opening lines of the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible: ‘Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities, all is vanity...
