    By David Bailey
    Located in London, GB

Sir Roy Colin Strong is an English art historian and former director of the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. PROVENANCE: The artist; Gifted to Roy Strong, 1987; Current owner. In 1971 the National Portrait Gallery gave space to a Welsh Arts Council Exhibition entitled 'Snap, Instant Image 1971', which was partly a manoeuvre by Roy Strong to cross portrait barriers that would have upset the Trustees if staged as a purely Gallery event. Bailey was the photographer, David Hockney the artist and Gerald Scarfe the cartoonist. Strong sat for Bailey attired as the photographer wanted. Bailey emerged as one of the photographers who visually defined Swinging London.
