Ancient Greek 5th Century BC Silver Siglos Owl Coin Diamonds 18K Gold Pendant
About the Item
A standing owl with wings outstretched is struck upon an authentic 4th century silver "siglos" coin from the Greek colony of Amisos in the Pontos region, which existed on the shores of the Black Sea near the modern town of Samsun in Northern Turkey. The opposite side of the coin depicts Hera, the Greek goddess of women and marriage, and the wife of Zeus. The owl was a symbol of Athena, virgin goddess of wisdom. This coin is set in a Steven Battelle designed matte-finish handmade 18K gold setting decorated with three 2.0 mm VS1 diamonds set at the cardinal directions with 2 small "jawan" granulation at the sides of each. The bail has a smaller 1.8 mm diamond. This high-grade ancient coin has a particullalry sharp and distinct owl image. The 18", 20" or 24" medium-weight handmade hammered 18K gold chain shown is not included with the pendant, but can be added. Please inquire if you want a chain also. We discount our chains 20% when purchased with a pendant. This pendant comes with a lifetime laminated coin certificate of authenticity. This is a really nice one!

Steven Battelle
Using ancient coins and traditional Balinese gem setting techniques, Steven Battelle’s jewelry offers history in the palm of your hand. The American jewelry designer and his team create pieces inspired by and incorporating historic coinage and materials used in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Asia.
Battelle first encountered cabochon stones, which are gemstones polished and shaped rather than faceted, on a trip to Southeast Asia in 1987. A predecessor of modern jewelry, cabochons inspired Battelle to pursue a jewelry hobby while continuing to work as a veterinarian for exotic animals.
He became fascinated with the ornamentation styles used by ancient Majapahit Java and Siam cultures, eventually transitioning from veterinarian work to designing jewelry full-time. He developed a partnership with Balinese jewelry makers, a collaboration which became a key component in realizing his designs.
The Balinese partners hand-make each piece using traditional methods that have been passed down for generations. While conventional blow torches and modern tools are used in much of the work, the heart of the jewelry’s creation is grounded in an artisanal approach.
