Carl Haag
The Tambourine Player, Watercolour Painting, Dated 1853

1853

About the Item

Watercolour with bodycolour on card Titled 'Donn d'Albano' lower left and signed and inscribed 'Roma 1853' lower right Image size: 19 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches (50 x 34 cm) This is a full-length portrait of an Italian woman with black plaited hair and pendant earrings, wearing regional costume and holding a tambourine. Carl Haag was born in Bavaria and visited London in 1847 to learn more about English watercolour painting technique, studying at the Royal Academy Schools the following year and settling in England. On a sketching trip in the Tyrol in 1852 he had a chance encounter with Charles, Prince of Leiningen (Queen Victoria’s half-brother) and Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Prince Albert’s brother), who jointly commissioned Haag to paint them in an Alpine setting as a Christmas present for Queen Victoria. Victoria and Albert, impressed with the double portrait, then invited the artist to their residence in the Scottish Highlands, Balmoral Castle, the following autumn, to paint scenes of their lives there. His association with the British court endured for a time after Albert's death in 1861, and there is a significant corpus of watercolours by him in the Royal Collection (including several Egyptian subjects, as Haag spent two years in Egypt and the Near East in 1858-60 and travelled again to Egypt 1873-4).

  • Feeding the Birds, Colourful 20th Century Oil Painting, Female Artist
    By Lena Gurr
    Located in London, GB
Oil on board, signed verso Image size: 40 1/4 x 29 inches (102.25 x 73.5 cm) Hand made contemporary style frame Here we see a smartly dressed woman sat on a park bench, feeding a group of pigeons that surround her. Lena Gurr had a prolific career in which she painted landscape scenes and still lifes but her most noted works are ones such as these, showing everyday city scenes that were laced with social commentary. Indeed, Gurr noted that her artwork always aimed to show "the joys and sorrows of everyday life." During the course of her career Gurr's compositions retained emotional content as they evolved from a naturalistic to a semi-abstract cubist style. Discussing this trend, she once told an interviewer that as her work tended toward increasing abstraction she believed it nonetheless "must have some kind of human depth to it." Lena Gurr  Lena Gurr, born in Brooklyn in 1897, studied at the Brooklyn Training School for Teachers, the Educational Alliance Art School, the Arts Students League with John Sloan, and with Maurice Sterne in Paris as well as in Mentone and Nice, France. Gurr was a member of the Artists League of America, the National Association of Women Artists, the New York Society of Women Artists, the Brooklyn Society of Artists, Audubon Artists and the American Artists Congress. She exhibited in numerous exhibitions held by these organizations as well as the Whitney Studio Club, National Academy of Design, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Brooklyn Museum, and the 1939 World's Fair. Her work is included in the collections of the Biro-Bidjan Museum, Russia and the Library of Congress, where she has been selected as a "Curator's Choice" in the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. In addition to her career as a painter, lithographer and serigrapher, she also taught art in the New York City public school system. She had three solo exhibitions at the ACA Gallery in 1935, 1939 and 1945, and a retrospective in 1963. Notable among Gurr's colleagues - many of them WPA artists - were Mary Cecil Allen...

  • The Snake Charmer, Victorian Signed Watercolour Painting, Orientalist
    Located in London, GB
Watercolour on card, signed bottom right Image size: 9 1/4 x 5 inches (23.5 x 13 cm) Victorian frame Here we see depicted a near-naked young boy standing on a carpet, facing the viewer and playing a fipple flute. In front of him sits a girl who is totally enthralled as a python begins to emerge from a basket, just beside her. The art historian Sarah Lee has pointed out that although nakedness was exoticised in Orientalist works, for snake charmers there was in fact another reason for this. Lee notes that often young snake charmers nudity was not intended as an erotic display but used to 'obviate charges of fraud' in their performances. The subject of this painting encourages comparison with Jean-Léon Gérôme painting of 1879, with the same name. Gérôme's work was then made particularly well-known by being used on the cover of Edward Said's book 'Orientalist', on 1978. As a result the work attained a level of notoriety matched by few other Orientalist paintings. It is therefore very likely that Gérôme's painting inspired this artwork. The Artist Luis Ricardo Falero (May 23, 1851 – December 7, 1896) was a Spanish painter. He specialised in female nudes and mythological, orientalist and fantasy settings. His most common medium was oil on canvas. Falero’s paintings are held mostly within private collections in Europe and the United States, although a watercolour of the ‘Twin Stars...
