After Federico Barocci - Mid 19th Century Watercolour, Madonna of the Cat

Unknown

About the Item

This exquisite copy of Federico Barocci's 'Madonna of the Cat' depicts the holy family together in a Renaissance style bedchamber. The Madonna holds an infant Christ in one arm and his older cousin John the Baptist in another as Saint Joseph affectionately leans over the family. All four figures look towards a cat in the lower left corner as John the Baptist teases it with a goldfinch. The heart-warming scene also has more serious undertones as many interpret cat's readiness to pounce as a representation of Christ's future sacrifice. The artist has interestingly added a halo over the Madonna's head which is not featured in the original painting. The painting is captured in remarkable watercolours detail, with excellent perception of facial expression and light and tone. The original painting is the only Barocci in a public British collection and is currently in The National Gallery's collection. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in a late 19th century frame with beaded running course and ornate motif of arrows and roses to the top of the frame. On paper.
