About the Item

André Favory (1889-1937) Portrait of the poet Jacques Portail, 1923 red chalk on paper 33 x 25 cm Signed and dated on the lower right Titled on the reverse of the sheet with pencil (see pictures) "Portrait de J Portail pour Porte-Voix" In its original frame : 50 x 40,5 cm Jacques Portail (1888-1960) was a french poet, he was the author of "Androlite" and "Porte-voix", both books illustrated by André Favory. Our drawings was intended to illustrate "Porte-voix" as indicated on the reverse of the sheet. André Favory was a french painter. He studied at the famous Académie Julian. He was strongly influenced by Paul Cézanne but he painted in a cubist style during the first years of his career. In 1914, mobilized, he left for the First World War. When he exhibited again in 1919, the experience of the trenches profoundly changed his conception of art. He moved away from the Cubist movement, which he considered too intellectual, to get closer to the carnal aspects of nature and life. He made frequent trips to Belgium to study the work of Rubens, who had a decisive influence on him. He was then a master of color, and therefore painted landscapes with warm tones, voluptuous nudes and very sensual female portraits. He exhibited regularly in major salons (Salon d'Automne in 1921-1923, Salon des Tuileries in 1923-1924, etc.). During the 1920s , Favory's works were exhibited in numerous galleries in Paris and Brussels, as well as in London, Amsterdam, New York and Tokyo. For critics as influential as Louis Vauxcelles , he is a major artist of his generation. He had a parallel activity of illustrator for such works as The Poems of sad humor of Jules Supervielle (1919), a new edition of Sentimental Education by Gustave Flaubert (1924) and other works by Paul Morand and Jacques Portail. With a serious and disabling illness, he had to stop painting in the early 1930s and died in 1937.

  • L V Guirand de Scevola (1871-1950) Portrait of a young woman, 1928, oval pastel
    By Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola
    Located in Paris, FR
Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scevola (1871-1950) Portrait of a young woman Pastel on paper 38 x 28 cm (oval) Framed under glass in a vintage framing : 45 x 35 cm A label on the back "1928 Portrait de femme Etude au pastel de Guirand de Scévola" (see photographs please) This pastel study is of course not signed, as the label on the back of the frame gives its attribution to Guirand de Scévola and, equally interestingly, the date 1928, but in fact the artist's style and execution are immediately recognisable without the need for a signature. This type of woman with a bun is typical of the models the artist loved. Her mysterious air recalls his Symbolist period, and pastel is hisr preferred medium because it lends itself to all the characteristics typical of his art. Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola ( 1871 – 1950) was a French painter. He was student of Fernand Cormon and Pierre Dupuis...
