Les Fleurs Du Mal. By Charles Baudelaire.

1947

About the Item

MATISSE, Henri. Les Fleurs Du Mal. By Charles Baudelaire. Illustrated with an original etching on Chine, 33 original photo-lithographs, 69 original woodcuts (including initials, culs-de-lampe, and 10 full-page illustrations), all by Matisse. 4to., 286 x 230 mm, bound in original printed wrappers with 2 original designs by Matisse, in original chemise and slipcase. [Paris]: La Bibliothéque Française, 1947. First Edition, one of 300 copies on Rives, SIGNED by Henri Matisse on the statement of justification. Planning on this immense work began in 1930, but production was interrupted by WWII. In September, 1944, after months of labor, Matisse finished his famous portraits inspired by three models: Carmen (of Haitian origin), A. Nelck and Lydia Delectorskaya. During this lengthy process, Matisse continued to read, and re-read, Baudelaire's poems in order to preserve a sense of cohesion and unity. After the images were printed, all the lithographic stones and woodblocks were destroyed. In extremely fine state, with slight fading on the front of the slipcase. Duthuit 19.
