Stephen Capogna
Baseball in Motion, Original Painting

2020

About the Item

Artist Comments
A baseball spins through the air, streaked with reflections from the blue sky above. High, slow moving clouds give the ball outsize scale and speed. Part of a series of photorealist paintings focusing on closeups of baseballs and other sports equipment. Stephen photographed the reference image for this painting using slow motion video on a smart phone and painted the work entirely with airbrush.

About the Artist
In a striking example of hyperrealism, Stephen Capogna’s body of work manages to capture the essence of macro photography in highly detailed acrylic paintings. Stephen’s inspiration initially came from golf courses near his home. The work focuses on the minute details of sporting goods, from the lightly scratched dimples on a golf ball to the individual fibers on a tennis ball. He works exclusively from his own photographs using an innovative airbrushing technique. Stephen utilizes a large spray gun at the beginning of a painting for color application in large areas. He then wields a small airbrush for the finer details, using templates hand-cut from mylar to create edges and shapes. “One of the biggest defining moments for me was incorporating the airbrush into my process of painting,” Stephen says. “Because I am limited somewhat with studio time, the airbrush allowed me to move much quicker.

  • Two Tentative Terns, Original Painting
    By Emil Morhardt
    Located in San Francisco, CA

    Artist Comments
Artist Emil Morhardt depicts an Elegant Tern and a Forster’s Tern hanging together in the winter shallows of the Santa Barbara beach in California. Their evening reflections ripple above the water highlighted in gold, silver, and copper leaf. "While the Elegant Terns show up in huge flocks, the much smaller Forester’s tern is uncommon in Santa Barbara, and so a treat to see."

    About the Artist
Emil Morhardt is an acrylic painter from Santa Barbara, California who expresses his passion for birds through realistic acrylic paintings. He paints at home in a studio room that has large windows and a north-facing view of the mountains. He observes the animals from this window, watching roadrunners, foxes, bobcats, deer, and coyote run by. Surrounded by this wildlife, Emil paints bird portraits reminiscent of those by artist John James Audubon. He bases his paintings off hundreds of photographs he takes of birds in the wild and at wildlife recovery centers. Emil captures the freedom and inquisitiveness that birds display in the natural world. Before painting birds, he painted landscapes of San Francisco and the Eastern Sierra. Emil was raised in the high desert of California and learned to paint from his father, who was one of the early California watercolorists...

Reaching under full sail, including a jib-headed "kicker" topsail on the Jigger mast, the white-hulled barkentine THOMAS P. EMIGH is depicted approaching what appears to be the headland near Byron's Bay, Australia. The EMIGH engaged primarily in the Pacific lumber trade and Byron's Bay was one of Australia's foremost timber ports. Byron Point lighthouse, which marks the easternmost point on the Australian continent, is visible on its promontory high in the mist in the far distance. A tug, a steamer and a schooner are shown off the harbor entrance, under the EMIGH's bowsprit. Launched at Tacoma in 1902, the 1040 ton THOS P. EMIGH was owned and operated by the Charles Nelson Shipping Company of Oakland whose house flag...

A sweeping landscape of Rapid City, South Dakota. Lights glow against a dark atmosphere filled with cliffs and mountains. Artist Bio Stephen Hannock's formal artistic training began at Bowdoin and led him to participate in the Twelve College Exchange, where at Smith College he came under the influence of Leonard Baskin, the renowned sculptor, illustrator, printmaker, and graphic artist.
