Artist Joey Korom demonstrates a calming abstract with muted tones of lavender. A subtle and demure artistic approach helps define the work. "The summer surface of this small pond echoes the colors found during a hot July," says Joey. "Tracey, a worker at a nearby diner, loves this colored water."
About the Artist
Joey Korom is an abstract expressionist painter who has been a practicing artist for 50 years. He experiments with media, colors, and textures to produce artwork that is “purely optical;†that is, artwork meant to engage the viewer, visually and emotionally, without employing any associations outside of the work itself. Joey is passionate about this expressive type of abstraction, an artistic mode that escapes the rules of perspective and realism. His educational and professional background is in architecture, which he considers to be “the father of all arts.†The use of line, shape, and proportion in Joey’s work is visibly influenced by his experience as an architect, but he seeks to avoid the rigidity involved in architectural draftsmanship. He focuses instead on underlying structure, seductive color, and loose brushwork. The artist sees his style as a personal liberation from the demands of architectural drawing, and yet, he’s never lost the disciplines he was taught.

Joey Korom
Joey Korom was born in Milwaukee in the summer of 1955. He is an Abstract Expressionist painter who has been a practicing artist for 50 years. Korom went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in 1989 from the School of Architecture, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and in 1992, he obtained a master of architecture degree. He experiments with media, colors and textures to produce purely optical artwork, that is, artwork meant to engage the viewer, visually and emotionally, without employing any associations outside of the work itself. Korom is passionate about this expressive type of abstraction, an artistic mode that escapes the rules of perspective and realism. His educational and professional background is in architecture, which he considers to be the father of all arts. Through Wychwood Art, he has carried out several large scale commissions for private clients. Jon comments: Painting is a journey. One starts at one place - the blank canvas, and hopefully ends at a resolution. Sometimes one gets lost. My aim in this journey is to create original, contemporary art that is grounded in place. Chance and opportunity are the travelling companions; but the art is to know when the journey is complete.
