Olivier Julia
Variation rythmique IX ed. 2/3 - geometric contemporary modern painting relief

2022

About the Item

Variation rythmique IX is the largest of the most recent series of seven different small and medium size contemporary modern sculpture painting reliefs by French-Dutch artist Olivier Julia. The relief is made from oak wood and finished with a mixture of anthracite grey and bronze acrylic paint . This art work hangs slightly free from the back wall, creating a floating visual experience. Due to the bronze in the acrylic paint, changing ambient light causes changes in the intensity of the grey colour. Furthermore, different viewing angles result in different relief patterns. Each work in the Variation rythmique series comes in an edition of three and is signed by the artist on verso. Olivier Julia (1952, France) graduated with a BA in Graphic Art from the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, the city where he now has his studio. Originally his work consists of sober graphic art and monumental drawings, but in more recent years he has explored the dimensional possibilities of graphic art. He creates three-dimensional objects from wood, often painted in subdued colours that are characteristic of his earlier work: differentiated shades of grey and deep blacks. His work is focussed on the subtle interaction of closed versus open, of vertical versus horizontal and of light versus dark. His work is exhibited throughout Europe and is part of many renowned corporate and public collections. Olivier's work features in a number of publications and was also selected for the main Dutch abstract-geometric and constructivist art exhibition Symposion 2015.

    By Daniel Fiorda

Daniel Fiorda in this new series of sculptures, continues in many ways the themes that have infused his previous work. For the last several years, Fiorda has dealt with technology, obsolescence, with the trail of discarded tech that humanity leaves behind and what it says about us. The new work takes this thematic one step further. These new wall pieces feature barely concealed found objects, almost fully engulfed by concrete, and yet still eerily discernible: industrial gears, computer keyboards, objects that evoke industrial post-digital eras. This piece is a set of 3 artworks...
