circa 1870

About the Item

Alfred Ste. Marie 1825 - 1890 Canvas Size: 32 x 26" (82 x 66cm) Outside Frame Size: 41 x 35" (104 x 89cm) Oil on Canvas A fantastic example of a Portuguese pointer from the middle of the nineteenth century. The European pointers (French, Portuguese and Spanish) were imported to England where they were crossed with other breeds to become the ancestors of modern-day English pointers. Alfred Sainte-Marie was born and brought up in Paris and was a pupil of Louis Roux. He was well known for his painting of genre scenes, animals, hunting scenes and landscapes usually in oil. He had a precise technique and style. He regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1853 and 1870 and has paintings in private collections and commands high prices. His work was sought after as hunting and hounds were an important part of French society. The painting is typical of the artist's work.

Often bathed in a flood of golden light, these landscapes usually feature water and cattle or sheep on grassy banks; sometimes a solitary figure is seen the distance. Breanski belonged to the real stamp of those landscape painters who nimbly seized moments of the day.
