About the Item

Edward Benjamin Herberte British, (1830-1896) The Meet Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1890, embossed makers mark to stretcher Image size: 15.5 inches x 23.5 inches Size including frame: 22.25 inches x 30.25 inches A wonderful scene of a hunting meet outside an inn by Edward Benjamin Herberte. A large group of hunters are shown horseback outside the Fox & Hounds inn as others look on. Meanwhile, a pack of fox hounds can be seen in the midst of the assembly waiting to be sent out. Edward Benjamin Herberte was born Egbert Bertram Herberte in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire in 1830. He was the son of an artist, also named Egbert Bertram Herberte and initially worked as a theatrical artist. It is not certain how or when he became known as Edward Benjamin Herberte, but this may have been a pseudonym he adopted to avoid confusion with his father. Around 1861, he was living in Wolverhampton, but later moved to Greenwich, London. After experiencing financial difficulties around 1866, he began earning his living as an artist painting hunting and sporting scenes and would often travel around. He won several commissions from local hunts including a number by the North Warwickshire Hunt, several of which are of views in Kenilworth. During the mid-19th century, the introduction of improved saddles enabled women to ride across country and over fences more securely and he was one of the first artists to depict this. In addition to his sporting scenes, he also painted a number of coaching scenes. He died at Prestwich, Lancashire in 1896. Examples of his work are held by the Berkswell Village Museum, the National Trust, Lanhydrock and Leicester Museum & Art Gallery. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

This is an original unique oil painting by the artist. Born into an artistic family in Doncaster, England during 1820. Best known for his equine art, of the same character as those of the elder Herring, including "The Home Farm," "The Homestead," "The Farm-Yard," etc.John F. Herring, Jr. was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire c.1820, to the well-known 19th-century artist John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795-1865), who at the time, was considered one of England's great Sporting and Equestrian artists, patronized by the English aristocracy. The father's mastery of the brush, and popularity with the nobility, served his son, Herring, Jr., well. Early on, John, Jr. was exposed to fine painting and wealthy patrons. Recent reference books state that Herring, Sr.'s first child was named "John Frederick Herring, Jr." and was born on June 21, 1815. John Herring, Jr. developed a love for painting, a passion also shared by his brothers Charles and Benjamin. Three of the four brothers became artists, painting in the same style as their father, often collaborating on a single painting. In the years after 1836, Herring, Sr., feeling threatened by the teenage John Herring, Jr.'s ability and growing popularity, began incorporating the tag "SR" at the end of his signature. John Herring, Jr. continued painting in the tradition of his father, the sporting and animal pictures...

Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year.
