Portrait of Tennis Dogs Scottish Victorian animal art oil painting tennis match
Located in London, GB
This superb love match Victorian Scottish oil painting is by noted animal artist David Gourlay Steell. Painted in 1889, the composition is two Terrier dogs in the foreground, sweetly snuggled up together under a bench with a tennis racket and discarded outer clothing on the bench. To the left of them a lady and gentleman stand at the bottom of stone steps, watching a tennis match from the corner of the court, the players out of view. In Victorian days, tennis was an ideal way for the sexes to mix and court. This painting suggests courtship and romance with both the dogs and the couple watching...

Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year. Hulk is the son of a well known Dutch maritime...

Glen Menteith – Highland Cattle. Scottish Cows. Victorian. Scotland. Large Oil.
Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
Henry Robinson Hall. English ( b.1857 - d.1927 ). Glen Menteith, Scotland – Highland Cattle. Oil on Canvas. Signed lower left. Also signed and titled on the reverse. Image size 23.6 inches x 35.6 inches ( 60cm x 90.5cm ). Frame size 33.5 inches x 45.7 inches ( 85cm x 116cm ). Available for sale; this original oil painting is by Henry Robinson Hall and dates from the last decade of the 19th century. The painting is presented and supplied in its original frame (shown in these photographs) which has had some small areas of the moulding on the edges repaired to restore its decorative appearance. The slip has been replaced with a contemporary choice that is sympathetic to the frame and the painting’s aesthetic. The painted surfaces have benefitted from cleaning and conservation, which was performed on our instruction, supervision and approval. This antique painting is now in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower left. The painting is also signed and titled on the reverse. Previously with Ciceri and Co, 57 Frederick Street, Edinburgh. (The company commenced trading in Frederick Street in 1875). Henry Robinson Hall was a Victorian and Edwardian artist who was particularly noted for his works on Highland cattle. He painted in both oils and watercolors. He was born in York to Eliza Robinson in 1859 and registered as Henry Robinson. His mother subsequently married John Storey Hall in 1867, and so his surname was changed accordingly. Hall lived for a while in Newcastle upon Tyne where he became involved in the artistic community. He later moved to Fylde in Lancashire and married. He later lived in Barrow in Furness and then Coniston in Cumbria, where he had a studio and also ran an artists’ supplies shop and café. He died in Coniston on 31st May 1927 and is buried in the churchyard of St. Andrews church there. Hall exhibited his works from 1895-1903 at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy. Today his works are held in the National Collection, the Atkinson Art Gallery, the Oldham Gallery, the Rossendale Museum and the Lakeland Arts Trust. He was a fellow of the North British Academy of Arts. © Big Sky Fine Art This original oil on canvas painting by Henry Robinson Hall depicts a herd of Highland Cattle ascending the slopes of Glen Menteith, in Scotland. The Glen of Menteith leads to the Lake of Menteith, also known as Loch Inchmahome, located on the Carse of Stirling. In the background we see the majestic mountain range, illuminated by the sky in shades of pink and purple, the colors bouncing back from the clouds. In the mid-ground there are smaller, rounded hills with trees, and a stone bridge spanning a gushing stream. We focus on the foreground, where there is gorse, heather and ferns abundant in lush green grass and half a dozen cattle walking along a rough path towards the viewer. The cattle have shaggy coats...
