Hendrick Govaerts
17th-18th Century By Hendrick Govaerts Genre Scene Oil on Canvas

17th-18th century

About the Item

Oral Expertise by Lisa Greaves. Hendrick Govaerts' work takes place between two centuries: between the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century. Flemish by origin, his activity was mainly concentrated in Antwerp, Belgium, where he is registered with the Guild of Saint Luke. It was a city guild for painters and other artists, mainly present in the Netherlands and Belgium. His fame is linked to paintings depicting genre compositions, scenes of feasts and banquets in which people are portrayed happy, intoxicated and enjoying themselves. The work in question is a typical example of the master's mature production, a perfect emblem of all the elements that characterise Govaerts' narrative and pictorial style.
