Mexican Maestro of the 17th century
17th Century by Mexican Maestro Virgin of Solitude Oil on Canvas

17th Century

About the Item

Dimensions: 165 x 123 cm without frame - 194 x 152 cm with frame Black painted, carved, sculpted and guilloché wooden frame, gilded parts in the inner groove. Publications: unpublished The large canvas presented here is a clear and valuable example of popular Catholic culture in Latin America. The Marian title “Virgin of Solitude” belongs to the Hispanic colonial tradition and represents the great loneliness and sense of anguish experienced by Mary on the Saturday before the Resurrection and after the death of Christ. The author of the painting is a 17th-century Mexican artist, as can be seen by the strong sentimentalism and great static nature of the composition, elements that enhance the decidedly devotional tone of the work.
