Carl Peters
"Sidewalk Downtown" - Cape Ann Artist, Street Scene in Gloucester, MA

About the Item

Great street scene by Carl W. Peters. Carl began sketching when he was in elementary school, and he often drew pictures on the blackboard to amuse his friends. His family moved from Rochester, New York, to a farm in nearby Fairport, and soon after, he quit high school to attend drawing classes. He spent several months at the Art Students League Summer School in Woodstock, NY, where he was a student of the great John F. Carlson. Like many artists, Carl would migrate to the artist colony of Cape Ann, Massachusetts every summer for decades, where he taught and painted on location prodigiously. Carl Peters became nationally known for his impressionistic landscapes when he won several prestigious prizes and awards. In 1932, he became the first artist in history to win a third Hallgarten Prize from the National Academy of Art. Today, Carl's paintings are held in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Art (The Smithsonian) and several other important public and private collections.
