Charles Wyatt Warren
High Meadows, Caernarvon

mid 20th century

About the Item

Contemporary impasto oil painting rendering a traditional croft and loch scene in rich color with a modern aesthetic, by British artist Charles Wyatt Warren (1908-1993). Mountains with reflections in the loch, dates to mid to later 20th century and is titled 'High Meadows' of Caernarvon. Following work by Scottish Colourist and post-impressionist artworks, this work by Wyatt Warren has real depth of paint and color, demarcating areas of blues, brilliant yellows and rich greens. The mountains stand proud of the canvas, with softer reflections in the water. The traditional white croft defines the painting as rural British/Scottish. Wyatt Warren is known for his landscape paintings in and around his home by Caernarvon. Many of his works are wide landscapes, such as this one, but are often more traditional in style. This one stands out among his works with more contemporary freshness and style. Oil on board, the board holds the thickness of impasto paint that gives this work its depth. About 19.5" by 40.5", this stands out across a room. The color stands against the simple contemporary off white frame. This will be noticed! No faults noted, ready to hang!

  • Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle
    Located in Hillsborough, NC
Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle is a landscape oil painting on board by 19th century artist Edward Train (1801 -1866). Train was a British artist, painting mostly landscapes in northern England and, like this one, in Scotland. The painting is signed E. Train (lower left) and dated 1850 or 1856, the last number being too faint to be certain. From 1850 to 1880 Train flourished as an artist, but his work was exhibited in galleries in northeastern England and Edinburgh from the 1830s. Born in Gateshead, Tyneside, Train left to take an apprenticeship with a London engraver. In the 1830s Train traveled with an expedition to the Hebrides and Shetland Islands. Here he became fascinated with the Scottish scenery that would become part of his repertoire of landscape art. Loch Awe lies in the west of Scotland in Argyll and Bute. Kilchurn Castle, built in the 16th century, lies on a peninsula inside the Loch, on the water's edge. Train would have traveled to the Highlands and painted the dramatic scene from the east banks of Loch Awe, across from the Castle. This painting captures the Highland mountains, loch and castle that was very much the ouevre of this artist's work. Train painted the Highlands decades before other renowned landscape artists of the 19th century, such as Alfred de Breanski, Louis Bosworth Hurt, Douglas and Duncan Cameron...

"Look at your feet. You are standing in the sky. When we think of the sky, we tend to look up, but the sky actually begins at the earth" Diane Ackerman In his Landscape painting’s James finds a constantly engaging conversation, a dialogue between light, air, and the earth. The subject has been a fascination which has established his reputation and crucial in developing his painting philosophy. These works are not of specific topography or familiar sites, it is James’ intention that they are a culmination of his experiences, memories and imagination. “I think it’s the role of an artist to make something which goes beyond a technical representation of what they see. In the same way that fiction can brings the writer and subject together, I trust the physical process of painting to reveal something which is both unique to me and communicates something others can feel is true” James Naughton 2016 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Oil paint on board Total size of framed painting : 31.2 H x 31 W x 3 D cm  Sold framed SIZE OF IMAGE: Height: 14.5 cm  Width:14.2 cm  Depth: 1 cm ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: James has been a professional Artist since 1998. Producing oil paintings from Bolton studio(UK) he has created a unique vision of Landscape painting. He has established his reputation through a consistent determination to make art. Trusting instincts which result in emotive experiences for him and the viewer. His work emerges from three preoccupations, light, landscape and the nature of paint, these combine to result in paintings that link tradition and a modern visual experience. James values direct observation, as a traditional way to record the Landscape but is also drawn to communicating the interplay between what we see and our imagination, forging bonds between experience and mythology. His process does not normally involve preparation, sketching or photography, he finds that inviting the natural movement of oil paint to suggest the direction of a work, in an intuitive way, provides the most exciting challenge. James has exhibited widely in the UK and at numerous acclaimed international Art Fairs. Recently his personal interest in the art of Thomas Moran led to an ambitious Arts Council funded project and included a two week road trip in Yellowstone, National Park, The Teton Range and Green River(Wyoming USA) . The project culminated in an extensive exhibition in the public art gallery of his home town Bolton. This year James’ passion for the American Landscape will develop further as he has been awarded a four week residency at Teton Art...
