Georges Jules Victor Clairin
"Le Dompteur de Pigeons" (ex. Christie's) - Large Antique Impressionist Painting

c. 1870

About the Item

A large, spectacular, absolutely splendid painting by noted French painter Georges Clairin, which appeared for auction at Christie's in 2004 (see photos of auction catalogue, supplied to us by Christie's New York; estimate was $100,000 to $150,000, and of course buyer's fees and tax would be added to that). Can't say enough about the museum quality of this work - the sensational level of craftsmanship, the story appeal (the entry of Napoleon's troops into Venice, St. Mark's square . . ), pretty much everything you could ask for. I have included the description from the Christie's catalogue among the photos, which you can read. Clairin was a famous painter, so if you become interested in this work you can find plenty of information about him online (rather than my plunking it all down here). Clairin exhibited at the Paris Salon, and did large paintings for the Paris Opera building along with prominent civic buildings in other important French cities. Note the fantastic gold-leaf and plaster frame. Great condition for its age - no notable flaws or repairs at all. The dimensions given are with frame (as 1stDibs suggests). The painting itself without frame measures 51.5" x 32". A rare opportunity to own a dazzling museum piece at an auction price. Can be seen and/or picked up in New Orleans if you wish. Proudly presented by Guy Lyman Fine Art, New Orleans, with our firm guarantee of satisfaction.
