About the Item

Beautiful mid-century landscape of upper Young Lake and Ragged Peak in Yosemite National Park by Helen Enoch Gleiforst (American, 1903-1997). The artist uses textural impasto in a palette of cool colors including blues, grays, and purples to create a serene mood for this beautiful piece. Signed "Gleiforst" lower left. Displayed in an antique early 20th century silver and gold toned giltwood applique frame. Board size: 12"H x 15"W. Helen Gleiforst was born in Nebraska but soon moved to Oregon where she studied at the University of Oregon. She then settled in Beverly Hills where she began to paint. Her teachers included Nicolai Fechin, George Melcher, John Hubbard Rich and Nell Walker Warner for Still Life studies. Gleiforst primarily painted plein air, as well as landscapes and florals. During her lifetime, Helen Gleiforst frequently exhibited her artwork including one-person shows at Stanford University, Ebell Society of the Federated Women’s Clubs, the Beverly Hills and Westwood Women's Clubs, and at Clearwater Junior High School. In 2006, her work was featured among top California plein-aire painters in Santa Barbara at the Sullivan Goss Gallery, exhibition titled “Early California.”

    Several small areas of lifted paint have been in-painted and restored. Antique early 20th century frame may show signs of wear consistent with age and history. Minor cosmetic issues will be minimized but may not be restored to original condition.
