Herman Herzog
Evening at Lake Lucerne by Herman Herzog

About the Item

Herman Herzog (American, born Germany, 1832-1932) Evening at Lake Lucerne Oil on canvas, 14 x 21 inches Framed: 21 x 28 inches (approx.) Signed at lower right: "Herman Herzog" German born Herman Herzog studied at the Dusseldorf Academy under such notable artists as Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, Andreas Aachenback, and Hans Frederick Gude. While a student, Herzog traveled a great deal, visiting Norway, Belgium, Holland, Bavaria, Switzerland, and Italy, earning him acclaim throughout Europe. Although Herzog achieved success early in his career with his European scenes, he is most critically acclaimed for his American landscapes. He immigrated to the United States around 1870 before settling in Philadelphia where his landscapes had already been exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts since 1863. He traveled throughout Pennsylvania and across the country to record scenes of the Hudson River, Atlantic City, Lake George, along the Maryland’s Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay, New Hampshire, Niagara Falls, Maine and Florida. He also travelled to the far west to Wyoming, Salt Lake City, Utah, Oregon, Yosemite Valley, CA, creating works depicting the American natural landscape. Herzog was a prolific painter and exhibited regularly at the Academy until 1880. By that time he had made a fortune through investments in the Pennsylvania Railroad and painted strictly for pleasure.
