Martin Sabransky
Vintage Modernist Landscape Painting, Monument Valley Arizona, listed artist

ca 1950’s

About the Item

Although born in Ohio at the end of the 19th century, Martin Sabransky studied art at Randolph Macon College in Virginia. He began his career path moving west, by first going to Kansas City before traveling further to Los Angeles by 1920. He became an architect and architectural draftsman, following that career well into the 1950’s. Apparently he also worked for Disney as a set designer, possibly as a second career. He started painting around the 1950’s and seemed to be captivated by the western desert scenes around Palm Springs and Monument Valley in northern Arizona. This painting is a stylized modern depiction of the Monument Valley landscape. Specifically it shows the “Merrick Butte & Arizona Mitten” in Sabransky’s own title on the reverse. His modernist approach is very likely an outcome of his architectural career in Southern California. Also, his set designing skills come into play here as well. The colors are bright and crisp and the painting really “pops”. There are some thicker areas of paint that help to give it additional dimension. It is oil on canvas and measures 20” x 24”. It is housed in a period 1950’s painted wood frame that shows the painting well. The overall dimensions are just over 24” x 28 1/2”. The condition is good with a few small discolorations to the painted surface in places near the frame on the right side. These are not very noticeable from any distance other than inspecting it up close. There is some craquelure evident in places, in the center, but that too is not too noticeable from any distance. The frame is in likewise good condition. The painting is ready to hang and enjoy.
