About the Item

Traveller in a Duch Village Meerhoud Jan Gorinchem 1633 – 1677 Amsterdam Dutch School Golden Age Signature: Signed bottom left Medium: Oil on panel Dimensions: Image size 21 x 25 cm, frame size 35 x 40 cm "Traveller in a Duch Village" by Meerhoud Jan is a wide-open landscape with a river at the background, enlivened by small and loose splashes of colour, individually designed figures, has been painted with delicate colours in shades of brown. The scenery has an idyllic charm and the serene harmony, the mood is being shaped by the colour palette, light and calm composition. The work shows strong similarities to the paintings by Jan van Goyen (1596 – 1656) and Aert van het Neer (1603 – 1677). Biography: Meerhoud Jan (Meerhout) was born probably in 1630 or 1633 in Gorinchem (Gorkum), The Netherlands. He was a Dutch, 17th Century Golden Age painter of landscapes, mountain landscapes and maritime. Meerhoud was known for his cityscapes. Details of his life are unknown. According to the RKD, his date of birth is uncertain. For certain, he was married in 1650, worked in Utrecht, Heusden Dordrecht and Gorinchem. He worked also in Amsterdam from 1630 – 1650. At the time he lived there, were several families of that same name registered in Amsterdam. The painter died on March 27, 1677. Johannes Meerhout living on the Nieuwezyds Voorburgwal was buried in the new church of this town, unfortunatly there is no proof that this was the painter we are mentioning, because those works are sometimes very reminiscent of Jan van Goyen’s early work. The Municipal Museum in Frankfurt has an engraving of him. He probably died in 1676, 1967 or in 1977. Today, his works can be found in private collections such us collection of Semenov, St. Petersburg, Russia and in public collections, including at the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum, Dordrecht Museum, The Hague Museum Bredius, Loevestein Slot, Utrecht Central Museum (The Netherlands), Bagneres-de-Bigorre, Abbeville (France), Frankfurt Städel Museum and Dessau (Germany).

  • Castle and Windmills at Frozen Pond Dutch Winter Landscape 19th century Oil
    Located in Stockholm, SE
Painting signed lower right "M Kruseman". What sets this painting apart is the large number and complexity of details that the artist managed to include in the scene without visually overwhelming the viewer. The color palette of the landscape is very realistic and harmonious. The foreground of the picture there are people standing by a sleigh drawn by one horse, in front of a charming small castle with turrets, nearby boats frozen in the ice at the pier are visible. The background, on the left side of the scene, we see houses and three windmills standing tall against the winter sky, adding a touch of Dutch countryside charm to the composition. From the frozen surface of the water, the whimsical silhouettes of trees to the intricate details on the façade of the castle and windmills - every element of the painting is a testament to the skill and talent of the artist. Antique oil painting on canvas, signed, framed. Size app.: 40,5 x 57.5 cm cm (roughly 15.9 x 22.6 in), frame is 60 x 75.5 cm (roughly 23.6 x 29.7 in).
