Originally from Haarlem but settled in Italy from 1656, the date on which he was active in Rome, Pieter Mulier started painting landscapes right from the start. He moved to Genoa where he lived for some time and finally settled in Milan, where he died at the beginning of the 18th century. In the present work, the characteristic stylistic features of Mulier's work are evident, such as the juxtaposition of bright flashes of light with leaden clouds.
