Poul Møller
Danish Mid-Century Colourfield Oil on Board of People and Houses by the Coast.

1976

About the Item

Danish oil on board painting of two women making their way home in a coastal landscape, by Poul Møller. The painting is signed PM and dated 76 to the bottom right corner. To the reverse there is a label stating the registration number of the painting to Poul Møller. To the bottom right there is the title 'Tinganas' and date 1976. The painting also has a dated artist's label to the side of the frame. Presented in a silver painted wood frame. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist atelier thence by descent. A colourful, though muted, view of two women talking and making their way home in a coastal landscape. The artist has beautifully captured the scale of the scene. Møller as usual has used a number of fields of colours, in parts almost geometric inspired, to give prominence to the buildings in their coastal landscape under a gray/blue sky. Strong lines of perspective take us on a journey with the people in the painting, drawing the eye beyond the various coloured buildings, across the sea to the imposing distant headland. The muted colours and the more intimate subject earths the whole painting giving us the impression of eavesdropping on a mundane daily conversation. To the two figures, lost in conversation, the scenery beyond is momentarily non existant, whereas we the viewer see the full beauty of the open expanse. An intimate painting which draws the viewer in to another world. Poul Møller was a Danish artist with a focus on landscape paintings often in the same colour palette. He worked with simple, figurative compositions whose colour surfaces structure the motifs. Landscape paintings, layouts and figure pictures are often tightly composed. He was much influenced by his fellow Danish artists and contemporaries Immanuel Ibsen, Edvard Weie and Søren Hjort-Nielsen.. Much of their work developed from Expressionism in the early years and lead to the renewal of Danish landscape painting in the mid 20th Century.
