William Pratt
Landscape with Sheep - Scottish 1920 Impressionist art landscape oil painting

1920

About the Item

This gorgeous, vibrant Scottish Impressionist landscape oil painting is by noted Glasgow artist William Pratt. Painted in 1920 the composition is sheep, shepherd and sheepdog in the foreground under copper beech trees. The land then slopes downwards across fields and more trees to a loch with rising mountains beyond, all under a blue sky. The vivid palette is superb with lime green fields in the foreground, interspersed with orangy brown tones of trees and the peacock blue of the loch in the distance, mirroring the blue of the shepherd's jacket. This painting is very attractive and gives on a wonderful impression of space and tranquility. This is an excellent example of Pratt's work who is one of our favourite artists. Signed and dated 1920 lower left. Provenance. Edinburgh estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, image size 24 inches by 18 inches, in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt frame, 32 inches by 26 inches, in good condition. William Pratt (1855-1936) was born in Glasgow. He was a painter in oils and watercolour of landscapes, marines and figure subjects. He trained at the Glasgow School of Art and Academie Julian, Paris. He spent several years in Crail and from 1892–1894 he devoted himself to painting the sea from a studio he built on the shore at Kilminning, Crail. He was a very talented figure painter and was awarded a bronze medal for his painting, 'The Old Covenanter', in the jurors awards of the Edinburgh Exhibition in 1886. He exhibited 30 pictures in Crail for the benefit of Crail Public Library, including large portraits of Mr and Mrs Cairns of Ashburn House. He lived at Kirkintlloch, later moving to Lenzie around 1910. He is represented in Glasgow Art Gallery and also the Edinburgh collection. Exhibited: Royal Academy 6, 1880-1936, Royal Scottish Academy 64, Royal Society of Watercolour Painters 7, Glasgow Institute 161, Aberdeen Artists Society 3, Walker Gallery Liverpool 23.
