About the Item
This stunning Old Master oil painting is attributed to a follower of Anthony Van Dyck. Painted in the 18th century it is a superb large religious art work of the crucifixion of Christ, illuminated by moonlight against a dramatic sky with dwelling in the lower background. Sir Peter Paul Rubens and the Anthony van Dyck painted many variants on the crucifixion. This is a stunning example with Jerusalem in the foreground as the moon and the sun create an eclipse on the upper left.
Provenance: Surrey estate.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 40 inches by 26 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an empire frame, 48 inches by 34 inches and in good condition.
Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in the Southern Netherlands and Italy.
