Robert Lavin
Global Marine Oil Workers on and Offshore Rig

1980

About the Item

"Global Marine Oil Workers" Artist: Robert Lavin Medium: Oil on Canvas Size: 39" x 64" Framed In 1980, Charles Russel Luigs, CEO of Global Marine Inc. commissioned painter Robert Lavin to create a scene of the companies’ workers drilling oil on an offshore rig. Luigs held great admiration and gratitude for the oil workers who provided the backbone of Global Marine’s operations. Luigs was known to put on a hardhat and coveralls, and join crews of workers to work alongside them on the rigs. When the workers found out that Luigs was among them, they would ask him to excuse himself as a matter of safety. Luigs cherished his interactions with the workers and hired Lavin, a social realist painter who was lauded for his true-to-life depictions of industry from the workers’ point of view. The completed painting hung in the Global Marine board room as a reminder of the folks who ensure Global Marine’s operation through their hard work, bravery and dedication. In 2001 Global Marine Inc. Merged with Global Santa Fe International Corp. In 2007 the company was aquired by Transocean LTC. The painting, “Global Marine Oil Workers”, was put on display at the University of Texas Collage of Engineering where Luigs earned a Bachelor of Science in petroleum engineering in 1957. Luig’s daughter, Susan Thompson kept the painting in her home after it was moved out of the university. The painting endures as an exceptional piece of Texas history and is available for purchase at Austin Galleries in Austin, Texas.

  • 19th century French, Surrender of the French at Huningen Fort to the Austrians
    Located in Woodbury, CT
Wonderful French period copy of the famous painting by Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille, which the original is now in a museum in Paris. This piece came from a private collection in New Jersey where it had been since it was purchased in France back in the 1950s. The previous owner was an Art dealer in NYC during the 1950s-70s and she kept some of her favorite paintings, this being one of them. The piece was re-framed in the 1990s In 35 years of dealing in paintings, I have never seen another example of this scene, it is very rare.! History of the scene: In the Siege of Hüningen (27 November 1796 – 1 February 1797), the Austrians captured the city from the French. Hüningen is in the present-day Department of Haut-Rhin, France. Its fortress lay approximately 2.5 miles (4.0 km) north of the Swiss city of Basel and .5 miles (0.80 km) north of the spot where the present-day borders of Germany, France, and Switzerland meet. During the time of this siege, the village was part of the Canton of Basel City and the fortress lay in an area contested between the German states and the First French Republic. The siege occurred within the French Revolutionary Wars during which Revolutionary France ranged...
