A substantial and psychologically penetrating study of the American musician. Signed lower right with monogram; titled and dated, verso, 1977. Born in England, Pearl Took first studied at the Skipton Art School (1943-7) and, subsequently, at Sir John Cass College (1947-9). After immigrating to California in 1957, Took commenced her active career as a fine artist, also becoming an art teacher at Pasadena City College and a freelance illustrator with the Pasadena City News. This listed English plein-air painter, attended Manchester College of Art from 1970 to 1974 and currently lives in Totnes, Devon. He describes himself as "a colorist who is inspired by flower gardens, especially English cottage gardens in early summer. A noted portrait and still life painter, Leon Franks studied at the Academie Julian and Grande Chaumiere in Paris and, subsequently, in Los Angeles at the Chouinard Art Institute and the Los Angeles Art Center. Franks additionally studied privately with Nicolai Fechin, Will Foster and F. Tolles Chamberlain.
