Maurice Blond (Polish, 1899-1974) was born in Poland as Maurice Blumenkrantz in 1899. Early in his education he split his passions between the arts and sciences - he first exhibited work at the Kiev Museum in 1911, but went on to study science at the Warsaw University in 1922. However he shortly returned to artistic studies, attending the Warsaw School of Fine Arts for a short while. Blond moved to Paris in 1924, settling in the artist colony La Cite Falguiere, where he met fellow Russian artists such as Mikhail Larionov and Kosta Terechkovitch. In 1930 he became involved with the Russian magazine 'Tchisla'. He entered the French army in 1939, but was soon discharged and sent to live in the Avignon area for two years. Post war he moved to Grenoble, where he painted full time, exhibiting his work in Paris with great success. He signed his work 'Blond' - the French name he adopted during the Occupation.
