About the Item
Painting oil on canvas measuring 67 x 45 cm without frame and 82 x 60 depicting a vase of flowers by the painter Niccolò Stanchi ( Rome 1626 - 1690 ).
The Stanchi brothers (Giovanni, Niccolò and Angelo), Roman painters of the 17th century, famous and courted by the patrons of the time, were, later on, totally ignored by historical critics, who spread, on them, a silence as absolute as it was incomprehensible.
In fact, their copious and admirable production of flowers and still lifes would have deserved quite a different fate.
Given this premise, the reconstruction of a reasoned catalog of the works that have come to light in recent times has proved to be anything but a simple undertaking. To complicate matters, it should be added that, at least until now, no painting by the Stanchi bearing the signature and date has been found. Rather, there is a vast series of works preserved in ancient collections of the Medici, Borghese, Colonna and Chigi families inventoried with attribution to the Stanchi brothers. This has made it possible, in light of a rigorous methodology based on comparison, to identify, in many paintings, the hand of Giovanni and Niccolò Stanchi.
Next to him, younger by a generation, emerges his brother Niccolò, who grows up in Giovanni's workshop; He collaborates on many of his brother's still lifes, evidencing a greater freedom of expression than Giovanni's more controlled and severe one.
In fact, although he moves in his brother's groove, Niccolò introduces, in the still lifes, dazzling naturalistic passages, of a stunning compositional effect and such as to enrich the poetics of still life, at the time dominated by Baroque aesthetics.
In this, the artist appears sensitive to the lesson of painters such as Michelangelo Cerquozzi, Mario dei Fiori, Michelangelo Pace and, above all, Abraham Brueghel,
In fact, Niccolo himself does not shy away from the suggestions of the Baroque, but his is still a moderate Baroque, in which the brightness of the hues curbs the impetuous exuberance of the dominant movement.
In such cultural interweaving sees the light of the present composition (Flowers in terracotta vase on a shelf), in which the encounter with Mario dei Fiori's lesson is tempered by the more sober and controlled compositional cut. That said, the painting undeniably bears the influence of Mario dei Fiori to such an extent that, had it emerged a few years earlier, it would, in all likelihood, have been listed with attribution to Mario dei Fiori.

Niccolò Stanchi
Niccolò Stanchi, a master of still lives, is mainly famous for his representation of flowers. He joined the group of painters who decorated the Galleria Borghese in Roma. On this occasion, Stanchi was committed to realizing decorations of a wreath of flowers on mirrors. The Stanchi brothers, (Niccolò had two brothers painters as well, Giovanni and Angelo), constituted one of the most fervent workshops of still lifes in Baroque Rome starting from 1630.

This magnificent canvas, hitherto unpublished to my knowledge, depicts a display of fruit set out in the open at the edge of a wood (apples, peaches, black and white pizzutella grapes, two split watermelons and a plum), and at the edge of a stream, with a hilly landscape opening up to the left. The fruit is placed in the foreground, very close to the viewer's point of view, and occupies, with its bright and festive colors, most of the field of vision. The painter does not seek a particular spatial geometry or constructive scheme, but indulges in a skilful and brilliant chromatic weaving of the surfaces, by means of a pictorial material applied with exceptional fluidity and vibration, if you like, even sensual in its luminous and 'tactile' corpulence in the taste of the full Baroque. The quality is excellent and the style appears surprisingly free and evocative, although it retains traces of the old Flemish naturalism typical of Roman Baroque still life painting, strongly influenced by the work of Abraham Brueghel, as evidenced, for example, by the tiny drops of visible dew, or the luminous reflections on grapes or the flesh of watermelons. These are all elements that undoubtedly indicate as its author one of the most important specialists of this pictorial genre in late Baroque Rome: Giovanni Paolo Castelli known as Lo Spadino.
