William Verdult
William Verdult was born April 7, 1939 in Putte, Netherlands on the Belgium-Holland border. He was a Dutch-American artist and sculptor whose paintings reflected a perspective that can only be gained by living daily with life and death, good and evil, compassion and horror, victory and defeat. Verdult’s subjects range from character studies to still-life surrealism, each emphasizing the beauty of man’s existence. Known as the “Dutchmaster,” Verdult studied under old masters in Rome, Belgium, Holland, France and the US, achieving his classical style. He was considered one of the most versatile and contemporary artists in the world. His portraits reveal a rarely achieved understanding and mastery of human anatomy, the precise contour and interaction of muscle and bone structure. While Verdult is most widely acclaimed for his classical portraits, his talents encompass an extraordinary variety of subjects like Madonna and child, Native Americans, nudes, seascapes and landscapes. Born during the uncertain backdrop of World War II, Verdult spent the first two years of his life in hospitals. Throughout his early years, he suffered from smallpox and rheumatic fever. Self-taught, Verdult started painting around that time. In 1950 at age 11, he moved with his family to the United States and spent his youth in North Dakota. His years in the Dakotas helped define some of his later works. From the Dakotas, his family moved to New York, where at age 16, Verdult spent most of his time in Times Square drawing, painting, watching and studying people of all nationalities. At 21, he moved to California and Newport Beach became his home. Within a year, he was awarded ‘Artist of the Year’ by the Orange County, Costa Mesa Art League. Shortly after, Verdult caught the eye of renowned sculptor Peter Ott, whom he studied under. He taught at the Carmel School of Art and in 1967, opened his gallery in the area. From 1968–77 as a tireless painter known for his 3 am start time, Verdult’s career soared. Demonstrating a rare blend of color and keen-aged sensitivity to his far-reaching subjects, he skillfully incorporated the classical, traditional, modern and avant-garde into a compelling, distinctive and multi-faceted art style. The artist opened galleries in Palm Beach, Laguna Beach and Palm Springs and art lovers, celebrities and investors were drawn to his paintings. After nearly 20 years of work, Verdult completed his rendition of King Tut Treasures. The paintings included gold, diamonds and precious stones. Though his exhibits and showings are too lengthy to list, they include headliner exhibits and showings of the Tut Collection and other works at the Sahara, Sands, Sundance and Marina hotels in Las Vegas, as well as five-star establishments in San Francisco, Corona Del Mar and Beverly Hills, Hollywood California, Atlanta, Hawaii, Florida and Texas. Though Verdult did not follow the traditional museum route in displaying and promoting his works, his art followers and personal friends include a list of Who’s Who in Hollywood, highlighted by his close friendship with Telly Savalas. Many collectors throughout the world own paintings by Verdult. Notable past and present collectors include Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Robert Redford, Frank Sinatra, Farrah Fawcett, Alfred Hitchcock, Tom Jones, Gene Autry, Red Skelton, Lee Majors, Jack Lord, Paul Newman, Elvis Presley and Zsa Zsa Gábor.William Verdult was born April 7, 1939 in Putte, Netherlands on the Belgium-Holland border. - "1940 - A Study of Apples" Original Acrylic on Canvas by Tom Perkinson, FramedBy Tom PerkinsonLocated in Encino, CA"1940 - A Study of Apples" is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Tom Perkinson. His use of saturated violets, vivid yellows, and resplendent oranges pushes color to almost-otherworldly realms. Perkinson describes his style of painting as "Romantic Realism," a technique that incorporates two iconic art movements. This style, in combination with the imagination of the artist, produces remarkable results, showcasing Perkinson's keen ability to capture emotion, nature, and life - all in a brushstroke. Both his technical talent and choice of subject matter pair perfectly with its original carved, custom, gilt frame. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for still lifes, fruit-themed art, impressionism, romanticism, realism, plein-air painting, apples, and nature. In the artist’s own words: “My color combinations aren’t in the realm of the natural world, because I don’t paint reality; I’m a painter of fiction. I try to paint a sense of place, as though this scene really does exist. I have had my collectors ask me where this scene is, and I just have to point to my head and say I made it up. Thus, I think of my work as romantic realism. I’m painting a certain reality that I’ve invented, inspired by the fascinatingly rich Southwestern landscape.” “Color gets all the credit, but it’s the values that do all the work. I don’t begin with sketches, because I want to be free to follow the painting in any direction. I start with washes of different values and tints. Then, I begin to look for a landscape. Several directions will appear to me at this time, and then I have to decide on one of them. During these first few moments, I must establish my distance from the scene. Am I a mile away or just across the river? This is one of the first steps, and I have to decide before I can continue. It’s important for working out the perspective and how things are going to relate to one another in the picture. Then, as the landscape evolves, I look for more images to add to the composition.” Artist: TOM PERKINSON (1940-) Title: 1940 - A STUDY OF APPLES Medium & Surface: ORIGINAL ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS (framed) Signed: HAND SIGNED AND DATED BY ARTIST LOWER RIGHT Year Created: 1987 Country of Creation: UNITED STATES Image Area Dimensions: 21 x 28 INCHES Frame Dimensions:* 31.125 x 37.125 x 2.25 INCHES *This work of art is being sold framed. As a child, Perkinson discovered he had a love for the natural landscape, and a talent for art. He fostered that talent through classes at the John Herron Institute of Art in Indianapolis, and then at the Chicago Art Academy upon graduating from high school. He received a degree in art from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1964, before moving on to graduate school at the University of New Mexico. Here, among noted works of a larger scale, he continued to paint the landscape, and it was this work that began to reflect a new fascination with the Southwest. He had found what would become an infinite source of inspiration. Influenced by early painters of the southern Indiana landscape...Category
