Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber
California Forest Fire

2002

About the Item

Archival pigment print Signed and numbered, verso 20 x 40 inches 30 x 60 inches 40 x 77 inches 48 x 92 inches (Total edition of 15) This artwork is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City. Please note that prices increase as editions sell. With the series, "Lost" (2003-2004), Nix and Gerber continue their investigation of the constructed landscape, this time examining feelings of isolation and loneliness. Like much of their previous work, this group of photographs blurs the line between truth and illusion. They subvert the traditions of landscape photography in order to create their own humorously dark world. Nix and Gerber’s images toy with romantic notions of landscape, and their lush, rich color and theatrical lighting magnify a sense of melancholy. The obvious artificiality of the scenes does not diminish the tension created in the photographs. In fact, this fake quality only serves to enhance the enjoyment of the illusion. Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber have been making art collaboratively for over sixteen years. Originally from the American Midwest, now based in Brooklyn, they construct meticulously detailed model environments and photograph the results. For the last decade they have found inspiration in their urban surroundings, imagining a future mysteriously devoid of mankind. Their miniature fake landscapes and interiors reflect a love of science fiction and dystopian entertainment (think “Blade Runner,” “Planet of the Apes,” “Logan’s Run”), an appreciation for great architecture, and an affinity with the Sublime painters of the Hudson River School. Their images of faux landscapes and gritty urban interiors have gained wide acclaim in both the U.S. and Europe, and Nix is a 2014 Guggenheim Fellow in photography.

  • Bus Ride, limited edition photograph
    By Ken Ragsdale
    Located in New York, NY
30"x40" photograph of created landscape of paper. from the series: "The Hundred- Acre Wood" signed on reverse edition of 5. The installation landscape scene created by Ken Ragsdale exisits only to be photographed. With each scene, the artist meticulously cuts paper and folds each component to be captured by his lens. This photograph of cut paper constructions depicts a bus ride through a forest scene from the artists memory. The hues of ambient amber, green, red and blue are created through lighting the staged scene created in white paper Ken Ragsdale’s process begins with rough sketches of places and things from his past that are relevant to current themes he is considering. This series focuses on a time period of 1974-78, in the regions of Northern Idaho, to Eastern Oregon and the areas between. As his working drawings solidify the dimensions of the objects which represent his memories from that era, Ragsdale considers the landscape, terrain and weather, filtered through his personal memories and experiences.

Once the composition and components are determined as to capture the aura of a memory, schematic drawings are documented and prepared for hand assembly. Laboriously the schematics are cut out, folded and tabbed to create their final 3-dimensional formats. As each object is placed and the structures oriented, Ragsdale modifies the scenes to perfectly frame each scenario for the final photograph. From simple sheets of white Bristol Vellum, the atmosphere and lighting brings each image to life and allows for a reminiscent view of a wistful past. Pacific Northwest native Kenneth Ragsdale’s work, derived from personal memories, involves a mixture of drawing, painting, sculpture, paper-craft, theatre...
