In his work Luca Marziale investigates the idea and the definition of landscape. The artist shows micro-landscapes, focusing his attention on the overlooked details of nature and on the microorganisms found in extreme environments.
Afar is a series shot in the Northern Afar region of Ethiopia, one of the hottest places on Earth, where temperatures can rise as high as 65 degrees Celsius. In this extreme environment exist one of the oldest bacteria found on earth: thermophiles, dating back three milliard years. Thermophiles continue to fascinate scientists, some believing they are a contributing factor to the most complex forms of life on earth. In the images, there is no familiar point of reference or clear scale the thermophiles are in relation to, abstracting the viewers perspective. The saturated colours, creating an otherworldly and alien-like environment, deeply fascinated the artist.

Luca Marziale
In his work, Luca Marziale questions the concept of landscape and our idea of the classic landscape. The artist’s attention is often focused on small details which he captures with macro zoomed lens to compose the ‘micro-landscapes’, as he defines them. These photographs challenge the observer to question their perception and perspective. The landscape has become abstract, the points of reference have disappeared, and the subject of the photograph is not immediately obvious. Thanks to his refined technique and personal vision of the landscape, the artist invites the observer to discover unknown and unusual landscapes, creating an inspiring and different photographic world. “Not all landscapes have to be vast and infinite; sometimes a closer look can be immense in the same way.”
