About the Item
C-Print on Fujiflex paper. Edition of 6
Tillman’s portrayals of China’s leading contemporary artists examine a unique psychological landscape of the present-day Chinese art world. To create his photographs, or film stills, Tillman spent two years in China interviewing his Asian counterparts about their childhood, hopes, fantasies and fears. He then channeled these discussions into vivid imagery, directing the artists themselves to act out characters and scenarios in studio sets that he built from their memories, dreams and subconscious.

Hugo Tillman
Hugo Tillman is a British artist known for his eccentric photographs directed by dreams, magic, and mundane reality. With uncanny scenes that are both carefully crafted and spontaneous moments of everyday life, Tillman strives to communicate through metaphors and visual stories. Tillman designs complete projects, beginning with intense research leading to travels abroad in search for the subjects and themes that interest him. This culminates in the production of his photographs, a complex process of staging and composition. For his three main series, Tillman has travelled throughout the world, composing projects that involve social, political, psychological and artistic issues. With Film Stills of the Mind, he spent two years in China interviewing leading Chinese artists. From these conversations, Tillman constructed a full sized stage set of their inner psyche. He then invited the artists to perform a scene within that set and captured the images with a still camera. The pictures work as an examination of not only the artists’ psyche, but of Tillman’s psyche as well. For a period of six days in Cuba, Tillman produced a series of interventions in Havana. The eccentricity and combination of related and unrelated elements in his mise en scènes call to mind the concept of the marvelous, a magnificent interplay between hope and reality. Daydreams of Mine is a celebration of the commonplace and extraordinary idiosyncrasy of the Cuban people. In Tillman’s most recent work, he created a series of black photographs. The catalyst being his great-grandfather Georg Tillmann’s collection of objects, this series highlights various ancient articles found in temples and ethnographic museums throughout the world. The result is a captivating group of minimally illuminated compositions, their definition mysterious. Born in London in 1973, Tillman moved to New York and earned a M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in 2004. His has exhibited at the Guangzhou Museum of Art, China; The Today Art Museum and F2 Gallery, Beijing, China; The Birmingham Art Gallery, England; The National Portrait Gallery, London, England; Elementa Gallery, Dubai; DF2 Gallery, Los Angeles; MoMA P.S.1, New York, among others. Tillman has also participated in a number of international biennales, such as the Guangzhou Photo Biennale (2009), Guandong, China; Shanghai Biennale, Moca (2006), Shanghai, China; and Berlin Biennale (2000), Berlin, Germany. He currently lives and works in London. FULL RESUME HERE: https://nebula.wsimg.com/6b84d15c6cfccb4eee3397aad45755d1?AccessKeyId=5BA7F18B810B8A0D868F&disposition=0&alloworigin=1

- ROSALINA (BACK)By Ruby RumieLocated in New York, NYinkjet print on satin paper, laminted in luster matte. Edition of 5 This body of work was born from a chance encounter between the artist, Ruby Rumié, and Dominga Torres Tehran, a woman who for more than 45 years has walked the city streets selling fish. Dominga caught the attention of the artist for her unique and natural beauty. For nearly half a century this woman worked unnoticed, but at that moment, she completely captivated Rumié. Weaving Streets is an attempt to rescue women like Dominga from oblivion and invisibility - women who have spent valuable years of their lives as ambulant street vendors, permanently wandering the neighborhoods of the city. Aptly named, “Weaving Streets” references the phrase used by grandmothers to describe those who walked the city streets often. Rumié’s goal is to present new views on the vendors and their environment. The viewer’s encounter with these women will be different for the exhibition – it will be special. Viewers will see for the first time what has always been there, like running a thin veil between the visible and the invisible, a veil of old and constant stereotypes that keep us numb, or blind, so we ignore the marvelous and different realities. “Problems such as gender violence, gentrification, social barriers and discrimination constitute a constant concern which I attempt to uncover through my work, by means of large installations where I use repetition as a platform for protest; bodies as objects of mass consumption that reveal the disappearance of our intangible heritage, and photographs to suggest the enigma of social stratification, all of these intend to stimulate reflection, playfulness, visual pleasure, emotion and inquiry” explains Rumié. Rumié condenses the collected material into a Corpus, a historical archival manner, comprised of five volumes that unfold spatially in the gallery. Photo albums picturing each participant, stamp albums...Category
