Sir Howard Hodgkin (knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1992 and appointed Companion of Honour in 2003) was a renowned British painter and printmaker. His seductive and complex paintings and prints feature richly-colored compositions of thick, expressive brushstrokes. Hodgkin's body of work uniquely straddles representation and abstraction, while demonstrating a profound awareness of art history. The present work, Red Palm, uses a lush palette of green, red and blue in a pattern that nearly resembles the feathers of a peacock. Hodgkin's mastery over the delicate application of color is evident in the use of additional pochoir hand coloring and gouache elements.
