About the Item
Abstract, large scale earth toned red, black, taupe and grey scene with dynamic lines, shapes and hand painted brushstroke texture. This dramatic Howard Hodgkin work is ideal for display in minimalist, modern and contemporary spaces. While British pop artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield numbered amongst Howard Hodgkin's circle of friends, Hodgkin's work is painterly, expressionist, and abstract.
The rectangular core of this elemental composition explodes with movement: frenetic marks of red striated with grey brushstrokes. The expressive mark-making in this print is an example of the artist’s movement in the late 70s towards pronounced gestures. Hodgkin used his hand as a mark-making tool, combining these textures with loose and urgent brushwork. Dark grey hand painted watercolor frames this work, as if the viewer were looking into a house through its window.
31 x 40 in. / 79 x 102 cm
Lithograph from two aluminum plates with hand colouring in watercolor (two black wash borders). Edition 50; this impression 44/50. Signed by the artist with initials and numbered 44/50 lower center in white pencil. Printed from two of the same plates as Blood, 1983.
Sand evinces the increase in emotional content and intensity in Hodgkin’s work after the late 1970s. His marks are more fluid and lush due to an increased looseness of handling. These later works show a richness and a surface texture previously lacking – mainly due to the application of gouache or watercolor by hand.
